Mid-Week Break: Learn About the Mi’kmaw Language

This one-hour workshop explores the origins of the Mi’kmaw language, the official first language of Nova Scotia, and how it relates to the broader Algonquin language family. Presenter Semise’l Sa’n will share writing systems, common orthographies used in literature, Francis-Smith alphabets, and other fun facts about the Mi’kmaw language. Semise’l Sa’n (he/him) is of the Popo’l and Sa’n clans from We’kwistoqnik (Eskasoni First Nation.) He takes pride in sharing the teachings of Mi’kmaw knowledge and Mi’kmaw language, passed down to him from family, Elders, and community. He serves as a Mi’kmaw Cultural Liaison for Nova Scotia in the department of Community, Culture, Tourism, and Heritage. Contact the library no later than 5 p.m. on April 29 to receive the Zoom link.
