Intellectual Freedom

This policy, first approved by our Board in 1969, has been expanded to cover access to the Internet through our Public Access Terminals.

All information accessible through Western Counties Regional Library is available to all borrowers, including children and young people.

The materials selection policy and the Internet access policy adopted by the Western Counties Regional Library Board are both governed by the Canadian Federation of Library Associations’  Statement on Intellectual Freedom.

Library materials are selected by qualified staff in accordance with the principles of intellectual freedom. Decisions to purchase are based on reviews in reputable journals and/or personal knowledge.

Selection policies which serve to govern the library’s purchase of written materials may not apply to material accessed electronically. Because it is not possible for library staff to control specific information which library users, including children and young people, locate on the Internet, it is the responsibility of the user (or the parent/guardian) to determine what is appropriate.
